International Commission of Jurists Victoria (ICJV)
ICJV is a non-governmental organisation composed of jurists in Victoria, including judges, lawyers, law students, and academics. It exists with the aim of advancing the objectives of the Geneva-based International Commission of Jurists (the ICJ Geneva) and working to ensure the application of our shared principles which include:
Affirming that human rights and humanitarian law are essential to achieve the goals of a just, democratic, peaceful and humane society;
Affirming that the rule of law is indispensable to safeguard and advance all human rights; and
Recognising that an independent judiciary and legal profession, maintaining the highest ethical standards, assume a primary role in achieving these goals.
All are welcome to our bi-monthly meetings, which occur on the second Tuesday of every other month at 5:30 pm in person and online.
Meetings include a short general business discussion, followed by a guest speaker. If you wish to join a meeting, please email executive@icjvictoria.org so we can confirm the location and/or send a link. The remaining meetings for 2024 are on 14 May, 9 July, 10 September, and 12 November. A final 2024 meeting will occur on 10 December.
A new working group will gather on the second Tuesday of months without general meetings at 5:30 pm. The working group will involve drafting primers on relevant issues, organising future speakers, preparing submissions, and more. If interested, please email executive@icjvictoria.org—all backgrounds and experience levels welcome.
ICJV operates because of the time, knowledge, and interest of our members and supporters. There are several ways to get involved that suit different skill sets, experience levels, and commitment capacities.
Get Involved
ICJV advocates for the rule of law through submissions and press releases. But promoting the rule of law also involves building and maintaining a community of practice dedicated to human rights. We are pooling our resources as ‘jurists’—legal professionals, legal academics, students—to support one another in this work. In addition to submissions and press releases, this includes developing short primers on relevant issues and sharing insightful discussions with practitioners.
Resources
We highlight the ICJV’s submissions, ICJV members’ work, and relevant developments in the promotion of the rule of law and advancement of human rights.
